Zelenskyy made a statement regarding the U.S. conditions concerning Donbas and Luhansk Oblast
Ukraine will receive security guarantees from the United States only after the war ends. This is contingent upon the withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from the Donbas region and Luhansk Oblast.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy made this statement during an online press conference in the capital of Qatar, where he is currently on a working visit.
The president explained that despite Kyiv’s desire to formalize the agreements earlier, the American side insists on signing the documents only after hostilities have ceased. Congress is ready to vote on these guarantees as soon as the conflict ends.
“The American side said, ‘No, this will only be done once the war ends.’ I said they wouldn’t act… but nevertheless, we were told that the question isn’t when this takes effect, but when these guarantees are given to us,” Zelenskyy noted.
The head of state emphasized that Russia is currently issuing an ultimatum: the war can only end after the Ukrainian Armed Forces withdraw from the entire territory of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions.
It is precisely this moment, according to the president, that Washington views as the starting point for providing direct security guarantees.
“We will be able to receive guarantees directly from the United States of America not before a ceasefire, not before the end of the war. But after our troops withdraw from Donbas, which is a condition for ending the war,” the president concluded.
Recall that President Volodymyr Zelenskyy attributed the lack of a date for the next trilateral talks to security restrictions on the American side and Russia’s unwillingness to meet in Washington.
Earlier, the Ukrainian delegation traveled to the U.S. for peace talks.
