63% of Estonian residents supported electing Madise president — ERR News

In Estonia, 63% of residents support electing Chancellor of Justice Ülle Madise as the country’s president. These are the results of a nationwide survey by Emor, cited by ERR News.

Thirty-one percent of respondents fully support her election, while another 32% rather support it. Twenty-one percent of those surveyed do not support Madise’s election: 11% do not support it at all, while 10% rather do not support it. Another 17% were undecided in their assessment.

Differences between respondent groups

Support for Madise is somewhat higher among people aged 35 and older. Among Estonian residents of other nationalities, 35% were unable to assess her election, compared with 13% among Estonians.

Emor research director Aivar Voog noted that Madise has been in the public eye for many years as Chancellor of Justice, so most residents of the country know her. According to him, broad support in the Riigikogu is accompanied by fairly substantial public support.

Support by party preferences

The strongest support for Madise’s election was expressed by supporters of the Social Democratic Party, at 86%. Among supporters of the Reform Party and Eesti 200, the figure was 83% each; for the Parempoolsed party, 80%; and for Isamaa, 68%.

Among supporters of the Centre Party, 23% were undecided, while 34% supported Madise’s election. Among EKRE supporters, opposition prevailed: 67% of respondents were against it.

The Riigikogu elected Ülle Madise as Estonia’s next president on September 2, with 71 lawmakers voting for her. The Emor survey was conducted online from September 17 to 24, 2026, among 1,114 Estonian residents aged 16 and older.
