64% of Americans believe the US is not winning the war with Iran — Jerusalem Post

In the United States, 64% of respondents said the country is not winning the war with Iran, while 36% hold the opposite view. The results of a CNN poll conducted by SSRS were published by The Jerusalem Post.

Twenty-six percent of respondents approve of US President Donald Trump’s actions regarding the conflict with Iran. Overall, 29% of those surveyed view his foreign policy positively, while 71% view it negatively. According to CNN, this is the lowest approval rating for Trump’s foreign policy in the network’s polling across both of his presidential terms.

Decline in support among Republicans

The most noticeable decline in support was recorded among Republicans. Sixty percent of Republican respondents approved of Trump’s actions regarding Iran, 13 percentage points lower than in March, when the figure was 73%.

As CNN notes, Democrats and independent voters had previously shown lower approval levels. Therefore, the latest decline in the overall figure is largely linked to a shift in Republicans’ position.

US-Iran contacts in New York

The poll was released while Trump was attending the UN General Assembly session in New York. On Tuesday, he said Iran must not obtain nuclear weapons and also allowed for the possibility of an agreement with Tehran or further military action.

According to the publication, US representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner contacted Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi through intermediaries on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. These were the first contacts between the sides since a temporary ceasefire agreement collapsed in July. Trump called the meeting between US officials and Iranian intermediaries “very productive” and said he saw movement toward an agreement. Iran conveyed conditions through Qatar, including an end to the war on all fronts and an end to what Tehran called US “acts of aggression.”
