An 82-year-old Frenchman opened fire after believing that Macron had been overthrown — Le Figaro
In the French department of Eure-et-Loir, an 82-year-old man was involved in an armed confrontation with law enforcement officers, during which two gendarmes sustained leg injuries.
The retiree was convinced that President Emmanuel Macron had allegedly been removed from power.
Emergency services and a special operations unit quickly arrived at the scene to apprehend the shooter.
The incident occurred on Saturday, June 20, 2026, at approximately 6:50 p.m. near the town of Nogent-le-Rotrou.
According to the Chartres prosecutor’s office, before leaving his home, the local resident took a rifle and ammunition. At the same time, he was actively shouting aggressive phrases such as “This is a revolution” and “Macron has been overthrown.”
Following an alarm call from the suspect’s wife, five officers from the Gendarmerie’s Surveillance and Intervention Platoon (PSIG) arrived at the scene.
The attacker’s daughter told law enforcement officers that her father was in the garden, hiding behind a cedar tree with a weapon in his hands. The gendarmes cordoned off the area and attempted to initiate peaceful negotiations.
While the gendarmes were attempting to establish contact with the elderly man, he fired three shots in their direction.
As a result of the shooting, two officers sustained leg injuries. The injured were immediately transported to the hospital in Nozhan-le-Rotrou and later to medical facilities in Chartres and Percy.
According to official information from the prosecutor’s office, there is currently no immediate threat to their lives.
After the armed attack, the elderly man hid in the basement of his own home, having likely sustained a wound to his arm during the exchange of fire. An elite GIGN special operations unit was urgently dispatched to the scene to conduct further negotiations and ensure a safe arrest. The building was completely surrounded to prevent the shooter from escaping.
A few hours later—around 8:50 p.m.—the suspect surrendered to law enforcement without resistance.
He was first taken to a hospital in Le Mans to have the bullet removed from his arm, after which he was officially taken into custody. According to the investigation, this retired craftsman had never previously come to the attention of law enforcement and had no criminal record.
