ICE agent shoots man in Austin, Texas — CBC World

In Austin, Texas, an agent of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) shot and wounded a man on Sunday afternoon. The wounded man was taken to hospital in critical but stable condition, CBC World reports.

Condition of the wounded man

According to Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis, the man sustained one gunshot wound to the torso in the north of the city. Austin police officers were not involved in either the ICE operation or the shooting.

Davis said that she could not provide many details shortly after the incident. At the same time, a special police investigative unit arrived at the scene. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security, which oversees ICE, did not immediately comment on the circumstances of the shooting.

Call for an independent investigation

Austin Mayor Kirk Watson said that city police should be involved in the investigation to ensure independent oversight of its progress. In his view, ICE should not investigate the incident on its own.

Democratic Congressman Greg Casar, who represents part of Austin, called for a full independent investigation, the release of body-camera footage, and for the ICE agent to be held accountable if they broke the law. Local media reported that a dark blue Toyota Corolla with damage to the passenger door and marks resembling bullet holes was standing under an overpass.
