AfD activist in Germany speaks about shift from the Greens — YLE News
In the German city of Stralsund, 32-year-old AfD activist Danny Keil, who previously voted for the Greens, spoke about the change in his political views. He is an AfD member, a city council deputy and an activist in the party’s youth wing, Generation Deutschland, YLE News reports.
Keil works as a pipeline and sewer installer and practices martial arts and handball. According to him, over five weeks he attended 30 AfD events, where he mostly distributed stickers to young people and set up information stands in different locations across Mecklenburg–Western Pomerania.
Security and migration
According to Keil, his political views changed gradually. He links women’s and girls’ accounts of feeling unsafe to migration and believes that immigrants and asylum seekers create danger in Germany.
Keil also mentions the events of New Year’s Eve 2015 in Cologne. At the railway station, men of migrant origin, mostly North African, sexually harassed and robbed women. According to the source, police received more than a thousand crime reports, and the incident became a symbolic turning point in Germany’s discussion on migration and security.

The activist also speaks about fuel prices, problems with caring for elderly people, and the financial difficulties of pensioners and families. At the same time, he stresses that he has friends among Syrians, Poles and Ukrainians.
AfD as a community
According to Keil, AfD attracts young people not only with political slogans but also with a sense of community. The youth wing organizes events and publishes materials on Instagram and TikTok about the activities of its members.
Keil says that calm and the usual way of life remain in his hometown. At the same time, he assesses the situation in Schwerin, Rostock and especially Berlin negatively. Previously, protecting nature and the environment was important to him, which is why he voted for the Greens. Now he supports AfD because he seeks to protect security, the local community and the environment familiar to him.
YLE News notes that German security agencies consider parts of AfD to be right-wing extremist. Keil himself stated that he is used to being called a Nazi, fascist or far-right.
