Akwa Ibom records the lowest investment income in Nigeria’s South-South region

Akwa Ibom State in Nigeria received 249.23 million naira in investment income in 2025—the lowest among the five states in the South-South region that published audited financial statements. This represents 49.8% of the planned 500 million naira, Premium Times Nigeria reports.

Comparison with states in the region

According to the audited statements, Delta State declared 18.29 billion naira in investment income, Edo—11.07 billion naira, Cross River—804.96 million naira, and Bayelsa—651.79 million naira. Rivers State did not publish audited financial statements for 2025.

Investment income includes dividends, interest and proceeds from the state’s stakes in companies and other assets. Such income is usually recorded as part of a state’s internally generated revenue.

Investment income

According to the financial statements, Akwa Ibom received 45.16 million naira from unlisted investments—stakes in companies whose shares are not traded on a stock exchange. This is the first income from this portfolio after two years with a zero figure, although the amount is lower than the 110.5 million naira recorded in 2022.

The statements list investments of the Akwa Ibom State Investment Corporation (AKICORP), including stakes in Anchor Insurance Company, Greenwell Technologies Limited, Ufani Ibom Processing Company Limited, Tropicana Mall and Falcon Next Company. The state also holds 100% stakes, including in Ibom Air, Ibom Mortgage Finance Bank Limited, Akwa Ibom Power Company, Akwa Ibom Water Company and Ibom Paints Limited.

The difference between total investment income of 249.23 million naira and 45.16 million naira in income from unlisted investments is 204.07 million naira. The publication notes that the statements do not make it possible to determine the specific sources of this amount or the reasons for failing to meet the 500 million naira target. Akwa Ibom Finance Commissioner Emem Bob and AKICORP Managing Director Imo-Abasi Jacob did not respond to journalists’ requests regarding the income structure.
