Algeria announces severance of diplomatic relations with the UAE

Algeria has announced the severance of diplomatic relations with the United Arab Emirates. As France 24 reports, Algerian state media said the decision was made after “exhausting all means” to preserve bilateral ties.

UAE ambassador given 48 hours

The Algerian side said it had given the UAE ambassador to Algeria 48 hours to comply with the decision. State media also cited the Emirates’ “provocative and hostile actions” as the reason for severing relations.

The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not immediately respond to France 24’s request for comment.

Tebboune’s previous statements

Algerian media had previously sharply criticized the UAE, accusing it of trying to sow discord in the region. Algeria’s President Abdelmadjid Tebboune said last year that his country’s relations with all Persian Gulf states were warm, except for one. This was a veiled reference to the UAE, France 24 notes.

Tebboune described Algeria’s relations with Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman and Qatar as brotherly. At the same time, he accused an unnamed country of interfering in Algeria’s internal affairs and attempting to destabilize it.

In February, Algeria began the procedure to cancel an air transport agreement with the UAE signed in Abu Dhabi in May 2013. In a televised interview in July, Tebboune said the UAE had had a “very negative impact” and stated that Algeria wanted it to stay away from the country.
