Andersson ends attempt to form Sweden’s government — The Local Sweden

In Sweden, Social Democratic Party leader Magdalena Andersson on September 28 ended her attempt to form the country’s next government. She explained this by the Left Party’s decision to vote together with right-wing parties to keep Moderate Party MP Andreas Norlén as speaker of parliament.

Andersson stated that after the vote for speaker, a new parliamentary configuration had emerged that could try to reach an agreement on the government as well. The Local Sweden reports this in its analysis.

Kristersson’s negotiations

The outlet notes that the next candidate for the role of sonderingsperson — a politician tasked with holding consultations on forming a governing coalition — may be Moderate Party leader Ulf Kristersson. According to The Local Sweden, the Left Party will not support a government led by Kristersson if it relies on support from the Sweden Democrats.

At the same time, the Centre Party had previously not ruled out supporting or joining a right-wing government, although it insists that the government should not include ministers from the Sweden Democrats. In the outlet’s view, Andersson’s withdrawal from negotiations at an early stage makes it harder for centrists to argue that left-wing forces have exhausted all possibilities for forming a government.

Party reactions

Left Party leader Nooshi Dadgostar called Andersson’s decision strange. Centre Party leader Elisabeth Thand Ringqvist accused the Left Party of leaving what she described as extremely constructive negotiations on the speaker’s post. Green Party leader Daniel Helldén stated that the Left Party is complicating the process.

The Local Sweden suggests that if Kristersson cannot form a government or parliament rejects his candidacy, the opportunity to conduct negotiations may return to Andersson. The outlet describes her decision as a risky move in a process that could drag on.
