An abnormal heat wave in South Korea has claimed the lives of 16 people
In South Korea, 16 people have died due to the intense heat this summer. More than 2,000 people suffered from heat-related illnesses between May 15 and August 2, according to the country’s Ministry of the Interior.
According to the ministry, a total of 2,025 people sought medical assistance due to the effects of the heat, and 16 of those cases were fatal.
Amid the prolonged abnormal heatwave in the country, temperature records were broken three times over the past week. The highest temperature was recorded in the city of Yangsan—42.5°C.
In Seoul, the capital of South Korea, the highest heat warning level has been issued due to the extreme heat. Meteorologists predict that temperatures could rise again to 40°C.
“Extreme, life-threatening heat is forecast,” the country’s meteorological agency stated.

As a reminder, due to the arrival of this abnormal heat wave, Ukraine may face a significant increase in electricity consumption as early as next week. According to forecasts, the load on the power grid could increase by approximately 1 gigawatt, creating the risk of a return to hourly power outage schedules.
The June heatwave in Europe led to significant losses in agriculture. The cost of the destroyed grain crops is estimated at more than 2 billion euros, with farmers in France and Hungary being the hardest hit.
