Antti Rinne may temporarily return to the Parliament of Finland
Finnish Social Democratic Party member of parliament Miapetra Kumpula-Natri has received support from the parliamentary leadership for her application to be relieved of her parliamentary duties. If her resignation is approved by the plenary session, Kumpula-Natri’s seat in parliament is to be taken by former Finnish Prime Minister and former Social Democratic Party chair Antti Rinne, YLE News reports.
The decision must be approved by parliament
The final decision on Kumpula-Natri’s application will be made by the parliamentary plenary session after considering the position of the Speaker’s Council. According to YLE News, parliament is highly likely to approve her resignation.
Support for the application within the parliamentary leadership was not a formality. Parliament sought an opinion from Veli-Pekka Viljanen, a law professor at the University of Turku. According to his opinion, parliament has broad powers in considering MPs’ applications for early termination of their mandates.

Politicians’ further plans
At the beginning of October, Kumpula-Natri will join the management group of Teknologiateollisuus, where she will be responsible for EU policy, trade policy and exports. She is an MP representing the Uusimaa constituency.
Rinne currently works as secretary-general of a parliamentary working group that assesses the recommendations of the Sámi Truth and Reconciliation Commission and prepares further steps. He has not publicly stated whether he intends to remain an MP on a permanent basis. If Rinne does not wish to retain the mandate, he will first have to accept it and then submit his resignation.
