Seven gourds in a Shaoxing resident’s yard become a tourist attraction
In the Chinese city of Shaoxing in Zhejiang Province, seven green gourds growing on a trellis in the yard of 75-year-old Chen Jingao have attracted the attention of tourists. The plants reminded visitors of characters from the classic Chinese animated series “Calabash Brothers,” ECNS reports.
The yard owner grew the gourds
Chen Jingao said that in March he bought three seedlings for six yuan and built a simple trellis. At first, he only wanted to decorate the yard. After several months of care, seven well-shaped gourds formed on the plants, which visitors compared to the animated series’ heroes.
A curved loofah fruit also grew among the vines. Visitors compared it to the snake spirit, the animated series’ female antagonist, which reinforced the composition’s resemblance to the animated story.

Visitors photograph the yard
According to the man, he planted the gourds not only for decoration but also for good fortune: in Chinese tradition, they symbolize blessings and prosperity. The viral trend was named “grandpa and seven gourds” and drew tourists to Shaoxing.
Visitors gather on the opposite bank to photograph the trellis and call the owner “grandpa,” while he waves back at them. Chen Jingao said he had not expected a small group of gourds to become a new attraction in his hometown and expressed hope that guests would feel the tranquil atmosphere of a Jiangnan water town.
