The California Assembly designated November 8 as Diwali Day

The California State Assembly passed a resolution recognizing November 8 as Diwali Day and calling on state residents to join in the celebrations. The resolution was approved on Thursday, according to NDTV World.

The resolution was introduced by Assemblymembers Darshana Patel and Ash Kalra. In the document, lawmakers expressed their deep respect for Americans of Indian descent and the Indian diaspora in California and around the world on the occasion of this holiday.

The Assembly recognized this year’s Diwali celebration, which falls on Sunday, November 8, 2026. The resolution notes that this holiday is of great significance to Indian and South Asian Americans. Diwali is celebrated annually by Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, and Jains in the United States and around the world.

Diwali, or Dipavali—a name that means “row of lamps”—is described in the resolution as one of the world’s oldest festivals. It brings together families, friends, and communities to celebrate generosity, unity, joy, gratitude, and reflection.

The holiday is also known as the Festival of Lights: homes are illuminated with candles, oil lamps, and clay lamps, and fireworks are set off in the sky as a sign of respect for health, well-being, knowledge, peace, and prosperity. The document associates Diwali with the victory of good over evil, overcoming difficulties, embracing positivity, humility, and kindness.
