Averof Neophytou may run for president of Cyprus in 2028 — Cyprus Mail

In Cyprus, former DISY leader Averof Neophytou may run in the 2028 presidential election. A source close to the politician told Cyprus Mail that he had decided to put forward his candidacy regardless of internal party procedures.

According to the publication's source, DISY itself will decide whether to support Neophytou. At the same time, the politician linked his participation in the election to whether there would be significant progress in resolving the Cyprus issue during the UN General Assembly.

Condition regarding the Cyprus issue

Speaking on Omega television, Neophytou said he would become a candidate if there were no developments whatsoever on the Cyprus issue. He added that even a small confidence-building measure could be considered progress; in that case, political forces should support the relevant efforts, in his view.

Neophytou also criticized DISY and the AKEL party, accusing both political forces of pushing the Cyprus issue into the background for the sake of political expediency.

DISY's position and other candidates

DISY MP Demetris Demetriou said the party would follow its statute when selecting a candidate. In an interview with Politis radio, he expressed hope that Neophytou would not announce his candidacy on Monday and that further developments would postpone such a statement.

Demetriou supported the participation of party members in determining the candidate. Another potential election contender, Andreas Mavroyiannis, said he would decide by the end of the year whether to run and called Neophytou a strong opponent.
