Austria and Italy are connected by railway tunnels under the Alps
Austria and Italy have taken an important step toward completing one of Europe’s largest infrastructure projects—the Brenner Base Tunnel. Construction workers have completed over 220 kilometers of tunnel work, connecting the two countries with two major railway tunnels under the Alps.
The project is being implemented with financial support from the European Union. Once the tunnel opens in 2032, it is expected to significantly improve transportation links between Austria and Italy, as well as strengthen rail connections between northern and southern Europe.
The new tunnel will increase the share of rail transport for passengers and freight, reduce traffic on road routes through the Alps, and promote the development of more environmentally friendly transportation.
The European Commission has cited the Brenner Base Tunnel as an example of successful international cooperation and engineering excellence that contributes to the development of modern transportation infrastructure and strengthens ties between European countries.
The European Commission announced this on Facebook.
As a reminder, the European Commission has confirmed its intention to provide Ukraine with an additional €8.35 billion in 2026 as part of the long-term Ukraine Facility program; however, the funds will be disbursed only upon the implementation of agreed-upon reforms.
The European Commission will investigate the role of an Irish plant in the supply of alumina to Russia.
