In the U.S., the man who attacked author Salman Rushdie was sentenced to life in prison
A U.S. court sentenced 28-year-old Hadi Matar to life in prison for attacking British-American author Salman Rushdie and supporting terrorist activities. The verdict concluded the trial, during which the author himself testified.
The attack took place in August 2022 during Rushdie’s appearance in New York State. The assailant inflicted more than ten stab wounds on the author. As a result of the attack, Rushdie lost sight in one eye and underwent several months of treatment.
According to the investigation, Matar had spent over a year studying the fatwa issued in 1989 following the publication of the novel *The Satanic Verses*. The jury found him guilty on all counts, including providing material support to Hezbollah, which the U.S. considers a terrorist organization.
Salman Rushdie is a Booker Prize winner and the author of the novel *Children of the North*. Following the release of *The Satanic Verses*, the writer spent many years under police protection due to threats on his life.
