Columnist says Ra’am and Joint List barred from elections — Jerusalem Post

The author of a column published by the Jerusalem Post said that Israel’s Central Elections Committee voted to bar the Arab parties Ra’am and the Joint List from participating in the upcoming elections.

Legal department’s position

According to the author, the attorney general’s office opposed the disqualification of Ra’am and the Joint List because the available evidence did not meet the required legal threshold. The column also states that the leaders of both parties repeatedly condemned the war crimes committed by Hamas on October 7.

The author called the attempt to remove the political representatives of Israel’s Arab citizens from the elections dangerous and undemocratic. He noted that Arab citizens make up approximately one-fifth of Israeli society and have the right to elect representatives who express their beliefs and aspirations.

Ra’am list

Ra’am is led by Mansour Abbas. According to the columnist, Yoav Segalovitz, a Jewish former senior commander in the Israeli police, is running second on the party’s electoral list.

The author believes that Arab political leaders can help build trust between Jewish Israeli and Palestinian societies. He also called for Ra’am and the Joint List to be allowed to participate in the upcoming elections and stressed the importance of Jewish-Arab cooperation.
