Azerbaijan marked the annual Remembrance Day for military personnel who were killed during the 44-day war in 2020. As Euronews reports, the country also links this date to the normalization of relations with Armenia and the restoration of regional transport and economic ties.

After the cessation of hostilities in November 2020, the sides began shaping a new political framework that provides for border delimitation, reconciliation and the development of transport routes. At the same time, a final comprehensive peace agreement has not yet been completed.

Trade and railway transit

At the end of 2025, Azerbaijan lifted transit restrictions, after which cargo began arriving in Armenia by rail through Azerbaijani territory. According to state customs statistics cited by Euronews, direct exports from Azerbaijan to Armenia exceeded $17 million in January-August 2026.

In particular, around 17,000 tonnes of diesel fuel and approximately 5,000 tonnes of AI-92 and AI-95 petrol were sent to Armenia. In March, Azerbaijan also recorded $960 in imports from Armenia. Cargo from third countries, including wheat, barley, buckwheat, fertilizers, propane, coal, timber and aluminum, is also transported via the route through Azerbaijan.

Digital transit and negotiations

National operators AzerTelecom and Telecom Armenia introduced a digital transit agreement. Part of Armenia's international internet traffic passes through Azerbaijan, while Azerbaijan can transmit data to the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic through Armenia's telecommunications network.

On August 8, 2025, in Washington, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan signed a joint declaration on a comprehensive peace agreement at a meeting attended by US President Donald Trump. In April 2026, civil society representatives from the two countries held the fourth round of dialogue in Gabala in the “Bridge of Peace” format.
