The Kremlin threatened Lithuania with necessary measures over its decision regarding nuclear weapons

Russia declared an “escalation of tensions” following the Lithuanian Seimas’ decision, in the first reading, to support lifting the ban on the deployment of nuclear weapons. The Kremlin stated that Moscow “will be forced to take all necessary measures” in response.

This was stated by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.

Peskov stated that the deployment of nuclear weapons on Lithuanian territory would be “a step toward escalating tensions.”

He made these remarks in response to a question about how the Kremlin views the process of lifting the ban on the deployment of nuclear weapons in Lithuania and the United States’ consideration of a proposal to establish a permanent military base there.

The Kremlin spokesman noted that all of this “will not contribute to stability and predictability on the European continent; on the contrary, it will be yet another significant step toward escalating tensions.”

“Of course, Russia will be forced to take all necessary measures to guarantee its own security,” Peskov stated.

As a reminder, Lithuania has taken the first step toward lifting its ban on nuclear weapons.

Earlier, Lithuania described Russia’s new threats regarding Kaliningrad as psychological pressure.

Lithuania and Poland are preparing to evacuate their populations in the event of an attack by Russia.

Lithuania has prepared an evacuation plan for Vilnius in the event of war.
