A sea mine has been detected in the Strait of Hormuz, through which a significant portion of the world’s oil exports passes. As a result, maritime authorities have urged crews to navigate the area with extreme caution.
The mine was detected near the northwestern coast of the Musandam Peninsula—an Omani exclave that controls the entrance to the strategically important strait.
Pakistan’s National Hydrographic Office, which coordinates navigational warnings in the area, has issued a warning about the potential danger to shipping.
Earlier, the Joint Maritime Information Center recommended that merchant vessels use routes closer to the Omani coast to minimize risks due to the potential mine threat.
