Pirates have seized a cargo ship off the coast of Somalia
Armed pirates have seized a cargo ship, the name of which has not been disclosed, off the coast of Somalia. International maritime security monitoring services reported this on Monday.
According to Deutsche Welle, the British agency UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) and the EU Maritime Security Center in the Indian Ocean (MSCIO) issued a warning that eight armed individuals had boarded the vessel near the Horn of Africa.
The UKMTO urged other vessels to navigate the area with caution and report any suspicious activity. The MSCIO noted that, based on currently available information, the crew is safe.

Piracy off the Horn of Africa declined after peaking around 2011, but it intensified again in 2026, according to DW. In April and May, three tankers carrying fertilizer and oil were seized, and in July, a chemical tanker was seized off the coast of Yemen. According to the publication, all four vessels are being held off the Somali coast.
The resurgence of piracy poses additional challenges for international shipping, which is already facing risks due to the situation in the Strait of Hormuz and Houthi attacks in the Red Sea.
