Most Americans opposed renaming Lake Ontario
Most U.S. residents do not support President Donald Trump’s initiative to rename Lake Ontario “Lake America.” Thus, the idea of changing the name does not have the support of the majority of Americans.
This is evidenced by the results of an Ipsos poll.
According to the survey, 63% of respondents oppose the president’s executive order, while only 14% support the White House’s initiative, and another 21% are undecided.
In particular, the survey notes that 84% of Democrats, 65% of independent voters, and 43% of Republicans oppose the renaming.
In addition, 68% of those surveyed believe the U.S. should be prepared to make compromises in the trade dispute with Canada, while 25% favor a tougher stance. Fifty-seven percent of respondents do not support further increases in tariffs on Canadian goods.
According to the poll, 46% of Americans place greater blame for the dispute on the U.S., 12% on Canada, and 18% hold both countries responsible. Forty percent of respondents expect tariffs to have a negative impact on their financial situation.
The survey was conducted August 28–30, 2026, among 1,023 Americans. The margin of error is ±3.5%.
