Bulgaria Plans to Build a Dam on the Danube Due to the Threat to the Nuclear Power Plant
Bulgaria is considering building a dam on the Danube due to the unfavorable water levels in the river. Authorities fear that further water supply problems could affect the stable operation of the country’s only nuclear power plant.
The project is intended to help protect the nuclear power plant’s operations from potential disruptions related to the condition of the Danube.
The Bulgarian government is considering a project to build a dam near the Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant, which would help maintain sufficient water levels in that section of the riverbed to ensure its stable operation, Energy Minister Iva Petrova said.
According to the project plan, the dam would be 300 meters long, and construction could take two weeks.
Petrova noted that the water situation on the Danube is “extreme,” although further forecasts are quite optimistic.

For the first time in three years, Bulgaria has allowed a Russian Il-76 to fly over its territory.
As a reminder, Bulgaria plans to purchase about ten systems for detecting and destroying drones under the EU’s SAFE loan program following an incident on August 8, when a drone exploded on Bulgarian territory. This was announced by Defense Minister Dimitar Stoyanov.
Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev suspended military support for Kyiv and withdrew the country from the “coalition of the willing” during his first months in office, according to The Guardian. The “Progressive Bulgaria” party won a decisive majority in the April 2026 elections, after which Radev assumed the post of head of government.
