Stubb says he does not believe Russia will attack NATO

Finnish President Alexander Stubb said that he does not believe that Russia — an aggressor state — will dare to attack one of the NATO countries. He said this in an interview with the German outlet Bild, YLE News reports.

Assessment of the threat to NATO

Stubb stressed that the North Atlantic Alliance must be prepared for any scenario. At the same time, according to him, Russia is currently not in a position that would allow it to start a war against NATO, which he called the most powerful military alliance in the world.

The Finnish president was skeptical of assessments by German officials that Russia could test the defenses of NATO countries before 2029. Stubb said that he sees no evidence or facts to support such a forecast and also does not believe that Russia will want to attack NATO.

Russia’s losses in the war against Ukraine

According to Stubb, Russia is trying to spread fear in Europe through information warfare, but at the same time is suffering losses in Ukraine that it cannot sustain. He noted that more Russian servicemen are currently being killed and wounded at the front than Russia manages to recruit.

In July, the American analytical center CSIS estimated Russia’s monthly losses at approximately 30,000 killed, wounded, and missing. According to this estimate, about 27,000 people are recruited into the Russian forces each month. Stubb said that he sees no possibility for Russia to suddenly mobilize forces to conduct combat operations on two fronts.
