The UK and nine EU countries will form a new naval task force against Russia
The United Kingdom has agreed with nine European countries to establish a joint naval task force to counter threats from Russia.
This was announced by Admiral Gwyn Jenkins, Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Navy, according to The Guardian.
“Russia remains the most serious threat to our security,” he emphasized.
According to him, the ten member countries of the Joint Expeditionary Force have signed a declaration of intent to create a multinational naval force that will operate as a complement to NATO’s capabilities.
In addition to the United Kingdom, the new structure will include the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, and the Baltic states. Canada’s participation is also being considered.
The admiral emphasized that the new force is intended to ensure joint training, coordination of actions, and readiness for rapid response in the event of a threat.
“To engage in combat immediately if necessary—with real capabilities, real military plans, and real integration,” he noted.
It is expected that the forces will be commanded from the British Armed Forces headquarters in Northwood, near London.
Jenkins also highlighted Russia’s increased activity in the waters near Britain.
“Incidents of Russian incursions into our waters have increased by nearly a third over the past two years,” he stated.
According to him, the UK plans to strengthen its defense capabilities, in particular through more active use of maritime drones.
As a reminder, delegations from Ukraine and Russia will meet next week in the Turkish capital to discuss maritime security.
The Maritime Ports Administration noted that Russia’s blocking of sections of the Black and Azov Seas due to “scheduled artillery exercises” will effectively block sea routes to Ukrainian ports.
Earlier reports indicated that Russia is deliberately delaying maritime exports from Ukraine—ships have been stuck for several days.
