The Pentagon has released $400 million in aid to Ukraine following a delay, according to Hegset
The Pentagon has officially released a $400 million military aid package for Ukraine. The funds were released following sustained pressure from U.S. lawmakers.
This was announced during a hearing of the U.S. House Armed Services Committee, according to the Kyiv Post.
Secretary of War Pete Hagseth stated that the bureaucratic obstacles that had been slowing down the process have finally been removed.
“The funds were released as of yesterday,” Hagset said during the meeting.
These funds had previously been approved by the U.S. Congress but remained frozen for a long time without clear explanations for the delay. This drew criticism from some U.S. politicians.
Prior to this, Republican Senator Mitch McConnell publicly stated that the Department of Defense was delaying the provision of military aid to Ukraine. According to him, lawmakers had not received a response from the relevant Pentagon analytical unit to inquiries regarding the reasons for the funding delay.
Once the funds are released, the aid is expected to be directed toward strengthening Ukraine’s defense capabilities amid the ongoing war.
As a reminder, the United Nations Development Programme is expanding its support for Ukraine in restoring energy infrastructure—by 2026, the amount of aid will reach $500 million. The decision was made following a request from the Ukrainian Mission to the UN, which submitted an updated list of needs.
Earlier, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot stated that following Viktor Orbán’s political defeat, Hungary should no longer block decisions regarding support for Ukraine.
