47% of Americans believe Trump overstepped his authority on deportations — poll
Nearly half of U.S. adults—47%—believe that President Donald Trump has overstepped his authority regarding the deportation of immigrants who are in the country illegally. This is according to a new poll by the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, as reported by Al Jazeera English.
About half of Americans also said that Trump has gone too far in restricting legal immigration. On both issues, roughly three in ten respondents believe the president’s actions are appropriate, while about two in ten believe he is not being strict enough.
Overall, 39% of American adults approve of Trump’s immigration policies. At the start of his second presidential term, that figure stood at 49%. At the same time, about eight in ten Republicans view his approach to immigration positively, although at the start of his second term, the approval rate among Republicans was around nine in ten.

Most respondents also consider the use of vehicle stops to search for and detain immigrants who are in the U.S. illegally, as well as the deployment of federal immigration agents to American cities, to be excessive. According to Al Jazeera, the practice of traffic stops was at the center of two recent shootings involving U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in the state of Maine. Republicans were less likely than other respondents to describe these actions as going too far.
For Trump, immigration remains a stronger issue in terms of approval ratings than the economy or Iran. Thirty-two percent of Americans approve of his handling of the economy—down from 40% at the start of his second term. Among Republicans, this figure stands at 69%, down from 78% previously.
About seven in ten American adults rate the state of the U.S. economy as very or somewhat bad. At the same time, about six in ten Republicans believe the economy is doing well, compared with about two in ten independent respondents and about one in ten Democrats.
