John Limbert stated that a forceful approach will not improve U.S. relations with Iran
John Limbert, a former American hostage in Tehran, said that the U.S. will not be able to improve relations with Iran through bombings and assassinations. He made these remarks in an interview with host Steve Clemons on Al Jazeera English’s program *The Bottom Line*.
Limbert was among the Americans held at the U.S. Embassy in Tehran during the 1979 Iranian Revolution. He later served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Iran.

According to Limbert, neither Washington nor Tehran can dictate terms to one another. He stated that, in his opinion, U.S. leaders believe that if they drop more bombs, Iran will do what Washington wants.
At the same time, Limbert said that Iranian leaders, in his view, hope to achieve the outcome Tehran desires by attacking ships in the Strait of Hormuz. He criticized both sides’ belief that they could force the other to make concessions through the use of force.
