The Rhine River's water level in Germany has fallen to a historic low
Water levels in the Rhine in Germany reached a historic low on Saturday amid a prolonged heat wave and drought. A reading of 68 centimeters was recorded at the water gauge station in Cologne, according to the Rhine Waterways and Navigation Authority.
This is one centimeter lower than the previous record set in October 2018. According to Euronews, the prolonged heat wave and drought have lowered water levels on the country’s busiest waterway to a record low.

A video from the Rheinaugafen marina in Cologne shows ships stranded in shallow water. City residents walked and rode bicycles along the dry riverbank, and some stopped to take photos.
Shallow water conditions are also being observed on other major waterways in Germany, including the Elbe and the Danube. As the heat and drought persist with no relief in sight, officials have warned of increasingly significant economic consequences for shipping and industries that depend on rivers.
