Venezuela and the Dominican Republic will work to restore relations
Venezuela and the Dominican Republic have agreed on a roadmap for further negotiations on the gradual normalization of diplomatic relations. Caracas severed ties with Santo Domingo after the Dominican Republic stated that it would not recognize Nicolás Maduro’s reelection in 2024.
The Venezuelan Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the agreement was the result of “prolonged dialogue” between the two countries. The ministry noted that the decision is intended to strengthen institutional channels of communication for the benefit of the citizens of both nations.

The Dominican Republic was among dozens of countries that refused to recognize the results of Maduro’s reelection amid numerous allegations of fraud by observers and the Venezuelan political opposition. Protests broke out in Venezuela following the vote, and the government’s crackdown on these demonstrations resulted in fatalities.
Currently, the interim government in Caracas, led by interim President Delcy Rodríguez, is resuming cooperation with partners with whom it had previously severed ties. In February, Venezuela also agreed to resume air service between Caracas and Santo Domingo and to restore consular services, according to Al Jazeera English.
