Britain has rejected Argentina's claims to the Falkland Islands
The British government has rejected Argentina's claims to the Falkland Islands. This was London’s response to a statement by Argentine President Javier Milei regarding the disputed British overseas territory in the Atlantic Ocean.
British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband emphasized that London’s position on the Falkland Islands remains unwavering.
“These islands are British and will remain so, as this is the position supported by the overwhelming majority of their inhabitants. Their right to self-determination is of paramount importance, is grounded in international law, and we will resolutely defend it,” the foreign minister emphasized.
British Defense Minister Wes Streeting stated that the Argentine president’s comments “reveal more about domestic politics in Argentina than about the Falkland Islands.”
“The Falklands are British because the Falkland Islanders choose to be British. Our commitment to the Falklands is absolute and unwavering,” Streating emphasized.
This was the officials’ response to the Argentine president’s speech, in which he stressed the need to “return” the Falkland Islands to Argentina. Milei also announced plans to impose sanctions against oil companies operating in the archipelago, which Buenos Aires refers to as the Malvinas Islands.
In addition, Milei stated that “the winds of change, favorable” to Argentina’s claims to the Falkland Islands, “are blowing across the globe.”
