British regulator fines forum linked to suicides

British regulator fines forum linked to suicides

The British communications regulator Ofcom has imposed a record fine of £950,000 (approximately $1.28 million) on the operator of an anonymous online forum.

The sanctions were imposed for hosting content that encourages suicide, which is officially recognized as a criminal offense in the UK.

The regulator deliberately declined to disclose the name of the site or its provider’s details to avoid giving the dangerous site additional publicity.

However, the official report states that the platform’s activities are directly linked to more than 130 deaths in the United Kingdom.

The regulator found that the forum contained detailed instructions describing methods of self-harm and discussions that encouraged vulnerable individuals to take their own lives.

“This is a significant fine for a suicide forum known for exploiting the most vulnerable members of society,” said Susanna Keater, Ofcom’s Director of Enforcement.

The investigation lasted over a year—from March 2025 to April 2026

Throughout this time, experts documented the presence of illegal content that the site’s administration refused to remove or block properly.

Ofcom emphasized that the provider’s attempts to restrict access for British users were completely insufficient and merely token efforts.

The site remained accessible without the use of special tools to bypass blocks, and the platform’s internal risk assessment systems were effectively non-functional.

The provider, whose headquarters are located outside the UK, has only ten working days to fully comply with the regulator’s requirements.

If the order is ignored, Ofcom plans to go to court to obtain a ruling to completely block the site at the level of the country’s internet service providers.
