Budapest is slowing down its subways and trams to save electricity
Budapest has decided to limit the speed of the metro and trams to reduce electricity consumption. A new schedule will be implemented on the city’s transit lines, under which metro cars and trams will accelerate more slowly.
This will add a few minutes to travel time but will save 15 megawatt-hours of energy per day.
Gergely Karácsony stated that, in addition, on some lines on weekdays, modern diesel buses with efficient air conditioning will replace electric trolleybuses.
“The Hungarian power grid has not faced a challenge like this in several decades, and we must prepare for it in the coming days. In such a tense situation, every bit of energy saved—no matter how small—is essential to avoid more serious disruptions in supply,” the mayor noted.
In Budapest, due to the current energy situation, the decorative lighting on the Parliament building will be turned off, and by Monday, the decorative lighting on the buildings of Buda Castle will also be gradually shut down.
On Saturday, due to low water levels in the Danube, the first power unit at the Paks Nuclear Power Plant had to be shut down again. On Saturday morning, Péter Magyar wrote on Facebook that the current capacity of the Paks Nuclear Power Plant is only 480 megawatts, compared to the usual 2,000 megawatts.
