The Czech Foreign Minister is hoping this will be Pavel's last NATO summit
Czech Foreign Minister Petr Mácinka said he hopes that Czech President Petr Pavel will not attend the next NATO summit. According to him, the Alliance’s current meeting in Ankara could be the last one for the Czech leader.
According to Macinka, it is still too early to draw conclusions about the composition of the Czech delegation to the next NATO summit.
“If the summit takes place in Tirana next year, President Petr Pavel will undoubtedly be in the thick of his election campaign. We’ve already seen how he was able to use the summit in Ankara for his own campaign purposes. I can’t even imagine what a disgrace it would be if he wanted to use another summit in Tirana in the same way,” he noted.
“But it’s quite likely that the summit won’t take place next year, but in two years. And I sincerely hope that a different president will be present at it,” Macinka added.
It is worth noting that the Czech president’s attendance at this year’s NATO summit in Ankara led to a scandal, as the government opposed Pavel’s inclusion in the delegation. The president secured his right to attend the summit through the Constitutional Court.
