The house where Hitler was born has been converted into a police station
In Austria, renovations have been completed on the building in Braunau am Inn, where Adolf Hitler was born. From now on, the dictator’s former family home will house a police station.
By repurposing the building, Austria aims to prevent it from continuing to attract neo-Nazis. The renovation took several years and cost approximately 20 million euros.
For a long time, the building was privately owned. It will now house staff from the district police department and the local police station.
Until 2011, the building housed, among other things, a workshop for people with disabilities. The owner refused to carry out the renovation necessary to meet new requirements. Following a legal dispute in 2017, the property was expropriated.
An expert commission opposed demolishing the building and turning it into a museum, instead supporting its renovation.
The house where Adolf Hitler was born on April 20, 1889, and where he lived briefly as a child is located in the city center on a narrow shopping street. A memorial plaque in front of it reads: “For peace, freedom, and democracy. Never again fascism. The millions who perished remind us of this.”
