CAF unanimously backed Infantino ahead of the FIFA presidential election
The Executive Committee of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) unanimously reaffirmed its support for FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who plans to run for re-election in March of next year. The decision was made late Thursday evening, according to Al Jazeera English.
CAF comprises 54 of FIFA’s 211 member associations and is a significant electoral bloc. In a statement, the confederation noted that the executive committee once again unanimously backed Infantino and thanked him for his support of African soccer over the past years.

CAF President Patrice Motsepe welcomed FIFA’s pledge to review the procedures that led to the controversy surrounding the scrapped proposal to create FIFA Forward Enterprise and sell a stake in future World Cup commercial revenues. He also emphasized the need for good governance, adherence to procedures, and transparency in world soccer.
The African confederation’s support came on the same day that UEFA announced its intention to boycott future World Cups at all levels as long as Infantino remains in office. Earlier this week, CAF Vice President Foussi Lekjaa of Morocco and FIFA Council members Hani Abu Rida of Egypt, Hamidou Djibrilla of Niger, and Ahmed Yahya of Mauritania also spoke out in support of the FIFA president. They were also backed by Veron Mosengo-Omba, the recently elected president of the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s soccer federation and former CAF general secretary.
