The Czech Republic Will Spend Billions to Combat Drought
The Czech government plans to allocate 4 billion crowns, or about $167 million, to combat drought and protect water resources. The funds will be used for water conservation in the landscape, the construction of small reservoirs, the development of irrigation systems, and the creation of larger-scale water infrastructure.
The allocation of funds was announced on Thursday, August 13, by Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš, Minister of Agriculture Martin Šebestňan, and Petr Kubala, head of the Vltava River Basin Authority. The government plans to allocate 4 billion Czech korunas to measures designed to help the country better withstand periods of drought and ensure a water supply for the population and agriculture.
This does not refer to a single specific project. The funds are planned to be distributed across several areas related to water resource protection. In particular, the government aims to integrate water management systems to use existing water reserves more efficiently.
Special attention will be given to retaining water directly within the landscape. This should help reduce water loss and make better use of precipitation. There are also plans to build small reservoirs and ponds. Another priority will be the development of irrigation systems, which are particularly important for agriculture during prolonged dry spells.
Larger-scale projects are also in the works
The government intends to allocate part of the funds to the creation of larger-scale water infrastructure. This includes facilities that can help store water and supply it to various regions of the country during periods of insufficient precipitation.
At the same time, the Czech government plans to move toward long-term solutions. This fall, the government is set to consider a special law that will designate 20 reservoirs planned for construction. In this way, the Czech Republic aims to work simultaneously on both small local projects—such as ponds and reservoirs—and large-scale infrastructure.
Why Is the Czech Republic Focusing So Much on Water?
Drought creates problems not only for nature but also for agriculture, industry, and the population. When there is insufficient rainfall over an extended period, water levels in rivers and reservoirs drop, the soil loses moisture, and it becomes more difficult for farmers to grow crops.
That is why the Czech government wants not only to respond to drought once it has begun but also to create the conditions for water storage and conservation in advance. 4 billion crowns are to be part of this strategy. Authorities expect that a combination of small reservoirs, irrigation, water conservation in the landscape, and new reservoirs will help the Czech Republic better prepare for future periods of drought.
