Paris recorded 38°C, and a large part of France was placed under a heat warning. In Italy, similar temperatures were forecast for 29 million residents, particularly along the west coast, in the Po Valley, in the south of the country, and on the islands. The Royal College of Nursing in the United Kingdom reported that some nurses fainted from heat exhaustion while working in hospitals without adequate cooling. According to National Health Service (NHS) employee Bailey Williamson, hospitals also recorded more cases of heatstroke, and the NHS struggled to cope with the situation. Scientists link the increasingly frequent and intense heat waves to climate change caused by human activity.
