Five teenagers were killed in a traffic accident in Ireland, and four others were seriously injured

Five teenagers were killed in a head-on collision between two cars on the M9 highway in County Kildare, Ireland. Four other people, including three women and a boy, suffered serious injuries and are in the hospital, The Guardian reports, citing Irish police.

The accident occurred around 3:00 a.m. on Sunday, August 16, near the third M9 interchange close to Athy. Emergency services received a report of a car traveling southbound in the northbound lane.

Police confirmed that all five victims were teenage boys. Their bodies were taken to Naas General Hospital, where postmortem examinations are to be conducted.

The second car was carrying three women—two in their 30s and one in her 20s—as well as a young boy. The driver and the front-seat passenger were taken to Tallaght University Hospital; their condition had previously been described as critical. Another passenger was taken to St. Luke’s Hospital in serious condition, and the child was taken to Children’s Health Ireland in Crumlin, Dublin.

Police Commissioner Justin Kelly called the collision horrific and emphasized the danger of driving on highways against the established direction of traffic. He also stated that the circumstances of this accident have been referred to Fiosrú—the police ombudsman—and therefore he cannot provide further comment.

Police are investigating the circumstances of the accident and are asking witnesses, as well as drivers who may have captured the incident on dashcam, to come forward.
