Australia confirms first H5 bird flu case in a mammal
Australia has confirmed its first case of H5 bird flu in a mammal. A long-nosed fur seal found in South Australia tested positive, ABC News Australia reports.
Animal found near Beachport
Federal Agriculture Minister Julie Collins told journalists in Hobart that the animal was found in Beachport. The town is located about 300 kilometres south of Adelaide.

According to Collins, this is the first confirmed case of H5 bird flu in a mammal in Australia. She also said that, based on the information available to her, the detection of the virus currently has no obvious connection to other sick or dead marine mammals.
Trip to South Australia
The minister said she would travel to South Australia in the coming days. There, she plans to discuss the state's response to H5 bird flu.
