A magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck Japan, injuring at least 37 people
A magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck near Tokyo early on Sunday in Japan. At least 37 people were injured, with one person seriously hurt, Euronews reports, citing Japanese authorities.
Epicenter and consequences
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the earthquake occurred in the area of the southern part of Ibaraki Prefecture, near Tokyo. The hypocenter was located at a depth of about 68 kilometers. The agency said there was no tsunami threat.
Japan's Fire and Disaster Management Agency also reported damage to one building in Saitama Prefecture. Some regional train services were disrupted in Tokyo.

Prime minister's statement
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said the tremors were felt in Tokyo as well as in the prefectures of Ibaraki, Saitama and Chiba. According to her, authorities are taking appropriate measures, and officials have been instructed to assess the extent of the damage and provide the public with timely and accurate information.
Takaichi urged residents of areas where the tremors were strongest to remain vigilant due to the possibility of another earthquake of similar magnitude.
