Areas along the Big Sur coast in California are being evacuated due to a wildfire
Evacuations have been ordered along the Big Sur coast in Monterey County, California, due to the Timber wildfire burning in the surrounding mountainous area. According to the state fire department Cal Fire, by Tuesday morning, the fire in the Los Padres National Forest had spread to 2,000 acres.
Nearly 500 firefighters have been deployed to fight the blaze. Firefighters are establishing firebreaks along Highway 1, also known as the Pacific Coast Highway. As of Monday, 5% of the fire had been contained.
According to Cal Fire, the fire is spreading slowly and primarily along the ground—through grass, shrubs, and oak groves. The flames have not yet reached the treetops. At the same time, ground crews are having difficulty reaching certain areas due to the steep and rugged terrain.

Popular tourist destinations are within the evacuation zone, including the Nepenthe restaurant, the Henry Miller Memorial Library, the Alila Ventana resort, and state parks. A section of Highway 1 has been closed to non-residents, and officials have urged visitors not to travel to the area.
Rescue workers are focused on protecting residential buildings and preventing the fire from spreading across Highway 1. According to estimates by emergency services, the fire threatens 259 buildings. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
