North Korea fired an unidentified projectile toward the east
On Wednesday, August 12, North Korea launched at least one unidentified projectile toward the east. This was reported by South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff, according to the Korea Herald.
South Korean military officials did not immediately disclose the time or location of the launch. They also did not provide details on the type and number of projectiles, their range, or altitude.
The launch took place the day after South Korea and the United States announced their annual Ulchi Freedom Shield exercises. The exercises are scheduled for August 17–27 and are intended to strengthen the allies’ joint defense readiness for possible scenarios on the Korean Peninsula.

On August 6, North Korea had already launched short-range ballistic missiles into the East Sea from the Wonsan area. If the latest projectile is confirmed to be a ballistic missile, it will mark the 11th time North Korea has launched ballistic missiles since the beginning of the year.
Pyongyang has long condemned large-scale joint military exercises between South Korea and the United States, calling them rehearsals for an invasion, and often responds to them with missile launches and other military activities.
