CNN, MS NOW and Politico plan lawsuit against Trump — CNBC
In Washington, US, CNN, MS NOW and Politico plan to file a joint lawsuit against President Donald Trump on Monday over a complete ban on these media outlets working at the White House. On Saturday, journalists from the three newsrooms were denied access to the White House — a day after Trump announced the restrictions.
As CNBC reports, the media outlets also intend to ask a federal judge in Washington to temporarily bar enforcement of the decision and immediately restore their permanent press credentials for access to the White House. The planned lawsuit describes the ban as an infringement of the First Amendment to the US Constitution and constitutional principles.
Trump’s position and lawsuit details
Announcing the ban on Friday, Trump accused the three media outlets of spreading fabrications and lies about him. In a Truth Social post, he said the restrictions could also affect other media outlets he called “fake.” The president referred to the aggregate of these newsrooms’ coverage and said one could grow tired of it.
In addition to Trump, the defendants in the planned lawsuit are to include his communications aide Steven Cheung, White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, and US Secret Service Director Sean Curran. On Sunday evening, the White House also removed CNN from the planned rotation of television networks for the presidential pool that was to accompany Trump to New York for the UN General Assembly.

The Associated Press case
The three media outlets plan to file their lawsuit with the same court where the Associated Press is challenging partial restrictions on its journalists’ access to certain White House areas, including the Oval Office and Air Force One. In April 2025, Judge Trevor McFadden ruled that the restrictions on AP violated the First Amendment and ordered that the agency be given the same access as other members of the presidential pool.
In June 2025, a panel of the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, by a two-to-one vote, suspended that ruling pending Trump’s appeal. The restrictions on AP were imposed in February 2025 after the agency declined to change its customary name for the Gulf of Mexico in line with the renaming announced by Trump.
White House Correspondents’ Association President Jacqui Heinrich said courts have repeatedly indicated that once journalists are granted access, the White House cannot arbitrarily revoke it because of the content of their reporting. CNN, MS NOW and Politico also cited in their statements the constitutional right to cover the news without government interference.
