Petrol in Pakistan rises by 4.61 rupees per litre, diesel gets cheaper — Dawn

In Pakistan, the government raised the retail price of petrol by 4.61 Pakistani rupees per litre, while the price of high-speed diesel was reduced by 1.96 rupees. The new prices will take effect on September 22. Dawn reports.

Following the revision, petrol will cost 393.75 rupees per litre, while high-speed diesel will cost 422.08 rupees per litre. The government will continue to collect 114 rupees per litre in taxes and levies on petrol and 100 rupees on diesel.

Reasons for the price revision

OGRA, the oil and gas sector regulator, said the price revision was mainly linked to rising petrol and diesel prices on the international market. International quotations, premiums and other factors were also taken into account in the calculation.

The price of high-speed diesel has fallen from its peak of 520.35 rupees per litre, recorded on April 3. At that time, petrol cost 458.41 rupees per litre, its highest level after rising from 266 rupees in early March.

Government measures and benefits

Against the backdrop of rising fuel prices, the authorities have reintroduced austerity measures: markets must close by 9:00 p.m., while fuel limits for official vehicles have been cut by 50% for three months.

On September 13, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced a support programme for users of motorcycles, three-wheelers and cars with engines of up to 800 cubic centimetres. Owners of two- and three-wheel vehicles will receive a benefit of 100 rupees per litre within a monthly quota of 20 litres, while owners of cars with engines of up to 800 cubic centimetres will receive the same benefit for 30 litres per month.

On July 17, Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik said fuel prices would be set daily in view of international market fluctuations. Petrol is mainly used by private and small transport, auto-rickshaws and two-wheel vehicles, while diesel is consumed by heavy transport, power plants and large generators.
