In Spain, a 28-year-old British climber dies during descent — The Guardian

A 28-year-old British climber died in northern Spain after falling about 61 metres while descending from the summit of Torre Cerredo. According to The Guardian, the tragedy occurred on Thursday afternoon on the eastern side of the mountain in Asturias.

Fall during descent

Spain's Civil Guard said the climber fell into a vertical gully about 20 metres below the summit. Torre Cerredo, at about 2,649 metres high, is the highest peak of the Picos de Europa range, which is part of the Cantabrian Mountains.

A rescue team found the man's body while flying over the area by helicopter. Two specialists were lowered to the site of the fall to recover the body and the deceased man's personal belongings, which had been scattered by the fall.

Contact with local authorities

The climber's body was taken to the La Morgal regional sports and aviation facility in Llanera, near the Asturian city of Gijón. A spokesperson for the UK Foreign Office said the department had contacted local authorities following the man's death.
