Migrant boat accident off Tunisia leaves dead — Jerusalem Post

At least two people, including a child, died after an inflatable boat carrying migrants met with an accident off the coast of Tunisia. According to Sea-Watch, at least six people, including three children, are missing.

Rescue operation

As the Jerusalem Post reports, citing the German humanitarian organization Sea-Watch, its vessel Aurora found five survivors and the bodies of two victims in deflated inflatable boats early Tuesday morning.

Another 23 survivors, including a young child, took refuge on an offshore oil and gas platform after the accident. They were rescued by the Aurora vessel. In total, Sea-Watch reported rescuing 28 migrants and said that Aurora is heading to the Italian island of Lampedusa.

Sea-Watch spokesperson Julia Winkler called for the creation of a state-run European search-and-rescue program at sea. According to the organization, more than 1,970 people have died or gone missing in the Mediterranean while attempting to reach Europe since the start of 2026.

According to Italy's Ministry of the Interior, more than 22,000 migrants have arrived in the country by sea since the start of 2026. During the same period in 2025, there were more than 50,000.
