The Summer Solstice on June 21: How to Best Enjoy the Longest Day of the Year

The summer solstice is coming up in the next few days—the moment when the Sun reaches its highest point and the day becomes the longest of the year. This natural phenomenon is linked to the Earth’s orbit around the Sun and the changing of the seasons. In many cultures, this day is considered symbolic and even somewhat “energetic.”

The summer solstice is the astronomical moment when the Earth’s Northern Hemisphere is tilted most toward the Sun, resulting in the longest day of the year. After that, the days gradually begin to get shorter, although the change is so slow that it’s almost imperceptible at first.

In 2026, the solstice falls at the end of June, and for Ukraine, this means about 16–17 hours of daylight, depending on the region. That is why this period is often perceived as the “peak of summer”—when the days are long, the evenings are warm, and night seems to be in no hurry to arrive.

From a scientific standpoint, this is simply the geometry of the Earth’s orbit, but in the cultures of various peoples, this day is imbued with symbolism. It is often associated with the beginning of a new cycle, purification, renewal, and a “turning point of the year” in a natural sense. In the traditions of some countries, there are rituals involving bonfires, water, and herbs. It was believed that on this day, nature was at its “strongest,” so people would gather medicinal plants, make wishes, or simply spend time outdoors until late in the evening.

In folk beliefs, the solstice was often associated with the weather: a clear and sunny day supposedly promised a warm and stable summer, while rain signaled a more changeable season. It was also believed that this day was suitable for making important decisions, but from a scientific point of view, this is more of a cultural tradition than a rule.

Today, the solstice remains primarily an astronomical event to simply observe—a long day, a low evening sun, and the feeling that the light of this day lasts a little longer than usual.
