Scandal at the 2026 World Cup following the Argentina-Algeria match
The match between Argentina and Algeria at the 2026 World Cup ended not only with a victory for Argentina but also with a major scandal. The Algerian Football Federation filed a complaint with FIFA regarding the referees’ decisions and the actions of Lionel Messi, which, in the African team’s view, went unpunished.
The opening match of Group J at the 2026 World Cup between Argentina and Algeria ended in a 3-0 victory for the reigning world champions. Lionel Messi was the star of the match, scoring a hat trick. However, after the final whistle, the talk was less about the goals and more about the refereeing and several controversial incidents involving the Argentine captain.
According to The Athletic, the Algerian Football Federation (FAF) has filed an official complaint with FIFA. The complaint cites two incidents that, in the opinion of the Algerian national team’s representatives, significantly influenced the course of the game.
Which incidents caused the most outrage
The most controversial moment occurred in the 32nd minute of the match. The Algerian side claims that Lionel Messi made a rough tackle on team captain Aïssa Mandi. According to Algerian officials, the Argentine slid in with his foot extended and struck his opponent in the shin and Achilles tendon area. The head referee, Polish official Szymon Marciniak, did not issue any cards, and the VAR system did not intervene.
Another controversial moment occurred in the 74th minute. During an aerial challenge, Argentine midfielder Alexis Mac Allister struck Ibrahim Mazzi in the face with his elbow. The Algerian player fell to the ground, but the officiating crew again failed to call a foul. Algeria’s head coach, Vladimir Petković, did not hold back his emotions after the game. “There’s no point in commenting on hypothetical situations, but absolutely everyone saw it, including me,” said the Algerian national team coach.
Other teams also spoke out about double standards
The situation sparked debate not only in Algeria. Representatives of other national teams also began to speak out about possible double standards regarding star players. South Africa’s head coach, Hugo Broos, cited the example of his team’s player, Temba Zwane. According to the coach, the player received a red card and a three-match suspension for a significantly less severe foul in the match against Mexico.
Former English Premier League referee Mark Halsey also shared his opinion. After reviewing the replays, he stated that Messi’s actions could be interpreted as violent conduct. In his opinion, the Argentine captain should have received a straight red card.
Can the match result be overturned?
Despite Algeria’s complaint, the match result will not be reviewed. FIFA regulations stipulate that the referee’s decisions on the field are final. Even if it is later determined that the referees made mistakes, this does not constitute grounds for overturning the result or ordering a rematch. Thus, Argentina’s 3–0 victory stands, and the team retains its three points and the lead in Group J.
What Other Decisions Might FIFA Make?
At the same time, FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee has the right to review the incidents separately. If necessary, the organization may impose sanctions after the match. This includes, in particular, a possible suspension of Lionel Messi for the tournament’s upcoming matches. The performance of the refereeing crew led by Szymon Marciniak may also come under scrutiny. In such a case, the referees could be suspended from officiating further World Cup matches.
So far, however, FIFA has not made any official decisions. Algeria’s next match will be on June 23 against Jordan. Argentina, for its part, will face Austria on June 22. The scandal surrounding the match continues to gain momentum, but regardless of FIFA’s future decisions, the result of the match between Argentina and Algeria will remain unchanged. This was reported by The Athletic.
