Ghana's public debt reached 733.9 billion Ghanaian cedis in July 2026, up 14.4 billion from June, when it stood at 719.5 billion cedis. The debt amounted to 45.1% of the country's gross domestic product.
MyJoyOnline reports, citing the Bank of Ghana's September review of financial and economic data. The cited data indicate that the country's public debt increased overall from January to July.
Debt dynamics
In January, Ghana's public debt stood at 663.4 billion Ghanaian cedis. In February, it rose to 674.1 billion, in March to 686.1 billion, in April to 695.9 billion, and in May to 720.8 billion cedis. In June, the figure declined to 719.5 billion cedis, after which it rose again in July.

According to the outlet, the debt increase is linked to higher domestic and external borrowing, as well as losses caused by exchange rate fluctuations.
External and domestic debt
Ghana's external debt stood at $28.8 billion in July, or 337.2 billion Ghanaian cedis. This was lower than $28.9 billion in June and $29.1 billion in May. External liabilities accounted for 21.1% of GDP.
At the same time, domestic debt increased to 396.7 billion Ghanaian cedis from 391.1 billion in June and 379.1 billion in May. It accounted for about 24.8% of GDP. The cash-based fiscal balance recorded a deficit of 0.6% of GDP in July, while the primary balance posted a surplus of 1% of GDP.
